About the role 

This is an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineering Manager to join and lead our Data Engineering and Analytics team; working closely with data owners across the business to provide the strategy on how data is held and managed across our platforms, back-office and integration systems. You will coach and empower the team to deliver roadmaps and projects through efficient data and pipeline management, ETL and visualisations to produce BI that enables data-driven decisions.

What you’ll be doing

As a hands-on technologist, you will be responsible for leading cost-effective data modelling, infrastructure and data warehousing solutions on Microsoft Azure to meet business objectives. You will have a proven track record of leading high-performing data engineering teams with a strong operational mindset to optimise prioritisation, quality and delivery. 

You will:

  • Work in a fast-paced environment with cross-functional stakeholder engagement to define and deliver the data platform strategy required to meet business objectives
  • Accountable for the delivery of data engineering roadmaps and projects on time, to specification and within budget using engineering best practices
  • Implement and manage ETL environments with data ingestion from disparate business systems and platforms across multiple database technologies and APIs
  • Design, build and deploy data models and ETL processes to meet data requirements in the most efficient way, taking into consideration cost, availability, scalability and security
  • Closely engage with business system owners and platform engineers to capture data structures and enhancements needed to support business requirements
  • Automate the cleansing, transformation and normalisation of source data within the platform using serverless technology
  • Proactively manage data problems with systems owners to uphold data quality and integrity within the data warehouse
  • Manage the technology used to deliver data solutions, maintaining a high level of documentation and knowledge bases
  • Actively manage and reduce technical debt, maintaining plans to remediate through the central planning repository
  • Research and suggest new services, technologies and methodologies, promoting the evolution of our data platform
  • Work with data owners across the business to evaluate and manage the Commify Master Data Management, Data Dictionary and Data Quality stores
  • Define and manage SLAs and SLOs for all data sets and processes running in production
  • Ensure the data warehouse technology complies with Commify’s operational and service management standards
  • Work in a high-availability environment; responsible for data platform incident management and providing appropriate out of hours escalation cover
  • Operate as a senior leader as a key part of the Technology Leadership Team

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in hearing from candidates with experience in the following areas:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading and coaching high-performing engineering teams
  • Strong experience in translating business problems into data solutions and roadmaps with a continuous improvement and experimental mindset
  • Significant ETL experience using cloud-based data warehousing technologies, ideally within Microsoft Azure
  • Excellent knowledge of SQL, NoSQL & API based data pipelines with proven experience of delivering production data engineering solutions with quality at the forefront
  • Experience of capturing ETL requirements to understand data structures and designing robust extraction processes
  • Experience with managing data in both bespoke data repositories and the data repositories of SaaS offerings i.e. Salesforce, NetSuite, HubSpot and Google Analytics
  • Experience with developing, managing and supporting data warehousing technologies
  • Collaborate with MI/BI Analysts/Visualisers to document and build their requirements
  • Strong experience of using agile development practices, ideally SCRUM or Kanban
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to manage stakeholders at executive and senior management levels

It would be great if you also had:

  • Experience with IaC technologies such as Microsoft ARM templates or Terraform
  • Strong CI/CD engineering practices including TDD, A/B Testing and Automation Testing
  • Strong domain experience in SMS and the business communications market
  • Knowledge of Azure Data technologies i.e. CosmoDB, Data Bricks, Data Factory and Azure SQL Data Warehouse/Azure Synapse and Azure Stream Analytics
  • Exposure to Data Science techniques and Big Data analysis
  • Experience managing data sovereignty
  • Experience using PowerShell for scripting automations
  • Experience using Tableau Report Design
