An interesting article in the latest issue of MarketingWeek warns retailers to buck their ideas up and strengthen their mobile presence. Research showed that in the first quarter of 2011, the amount of consumers searching for retail information on their mobiles more than trebled. Mobile retail searches now account for 11% of all searches on the web.
Debenhams is one retailer who is an advocate of a strong mobile presence. Visits to their site from mobile devices have increased 500% year on year.
One possible reason for the popularity of mobile marketingcould be that shoppers always have their mobile device with them, a fact confirmed by Simon Forester, Online Trading Director at Debenhams. “Mobile devices are an integral part of consumers’ lives – most people leaving the house without their phone are likely to go back and get it.”
But having a strong mobile presence only allows for one-way communication. If retailers integrate SMS into their mobile strategy, they have the opportunity to communicate with their consumers and let their customers communicate with them.
