Is RCS the future of retail marketing? [Infographic]

Topic: ,

Did you know that direct mail can be traced back to 1000 BC? The first email campaign, by contrast, was a mere 40 years ago, and the first mobile marketing campaign has just turned 18.

Technology has never developed as fast as it’s developed in the last 50 years. According to Ray Kurzweil, “We won’t experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century—it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today’s rate).” (Source).

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that the natural successor to both email and SMS isn’t still being dreamed up – it’s here today, and it’s called RCS (Rich Communication Service).

RCS replaces SMS the default messaging app on mobile phones, and by 2021, is expected to be the world’s biggest business messaging platform (source). If this is the first you’ve heard of it, don’t worry; now is the perfect time to start investigating what this technology could deliver for your business. (Hint: we can help – get in touch to learn more).

Our infographic takes a journey through marcomms tech, with their successes and limitations along the way. We finish up looking to the future, which is just around the corner, via RCS.

I'm Liz Wilson, and I have the privilege of heading up the marketing team here at Esendex. I've seen marketing evolve from buying a list of email addresses and sending a cold message, to today's much more satisfying practice of delivering great content via multiple channels, and inviting people to engage with us on their terms. I hope you find our blog a valuable source of info and ideas; all feedback is welcome!
